We all agree that we learn everyday as we explore our lives.
We all agree that learning is not what happens only at schools.
But then what is learning?
As one way to define learning, we can see what we become able to do after we learn something
Ex 1.
“I pushed a book on the table too hard, and it fell off”
“I rolled a bottle on the table too hard, and it fell off”
“I missed a step and almost fell down the stairs.”
Based on the accumulation of these experiences, we learn that everything falls to the ground unless something holds it.
After this learning, we begin to take it into account when interacting with objects; the result of this learning contributes to the way we frame our interactions with them.
Ex 2.
“Ramy gave me one stone, so now I have three stones.”
Regarding this situation,
A might frame it as, “Oh, so three stones now- that’s nice.”
B might frame it as, “Oh, then the person must’ve had 2 stones before.”
C might frame it as, “Oh, 3-1=2”
If someone has learned mathematical operations, they might frame the situation like B .
If someone has learned both mathematical representations and operations, they might frame it like C.
Likewise, based on what we learn, we come to frame our situations in diverse ways.
Learning should not stop at simply memorizing more facts.
Learning should not stop at merely repeating given processes.
Learning should not stop at just finding the correct answers.
Learning should connect to how we frame our lives in our own ways — so that we can explore life on our own terms.
